Where recordings come from

Transcribe a recording from the app you used

You record in one app and transcribe in another. This guide lists the apps people ask about and what file each one gives you. Scriptorium does not connect to any of them: you download the file and upload it here.

Updated

Pick the app you recorded in

Each page below explains what file that app gives you, how to get it out in general terms, and what to expect from the transcript. Every one of them ends in the same step: you choose the file on this site. Menu names and where options live change between app versions, plans and operating systems, so treat the steps as the general route and check the app's own help page for the current wording.

  • Zoom: MP4 or M4A downloaded from Zoom; cloud recording depends on the host's plan.
  • Microsoft Teams: An MP4 from OneDrive or SharePoint, if your organisation allows download.
  • Google Meet: An MP4 from Google Drive, if the call was recorded.
  • iPhone voice memos: M4A shared out of the Voice Memos app.
  • Telegram voice messages: OGG audio you save from a chat you are in.
  • Instagram reels: Only reels you made or may use, as a video file.
  • TikTok videos: Only videos you made or may use, as a video file.
  • Podcast episodes: The MP3 from your editor or host, for your own show or permitted audio.
  • Loom videos: The MP4 downloaded from Loom, where your plan allows.
  • Live audio rooms: Only if the host made a recording available to you.

What every route has in common

A recording is a file. Zoom, Teams and Meet produce video, voice memos and Telegram produce audio, and podcasts are an export from an editor or a host. This site accepts the common audio and video types, so you almost never need to convert anything first; the formats page lists them. After the upload you get a timestamped transcript you can correct line by line and export as text, SRT, VTT, Markdown, JSON or CSV.

What we do not do

  • There is no call bot. Nothing joins your Zoom, Teams or Meet meetings, live or after the fact.
  • There is no link input. Pasting a meeting, reel, video or podcast link does not work, and the site does not download from other platforms.
  • There is no plug-in, bot or integration for the apps listed here. You export the file from the app yourself.
  • We do not read an app's own captions or transcript. We transcribe the audio of the file you upload.

This is deliberate. Because a file is the only input, you always decide what leaves your device and what does not, and other people's videos cannot be pulled in by pasting an address.

Permission and privacy come first

Recordings contain other people's voices and sometimes their private details. Upload only recordings you made, took part in with agreement, or have permission to use. Laws on recording conversations differ by place, so check yours before you record. Uploaded files go to our server to be transcribed; this guide and the self-hosted option cover what to do when the material is confidential. A transcript is a draft: check names, numbers and quotes against the audio before you rely on it.

Once you have the text: pages by job

If you know what the transcript is for, these pages cover the care that job needs: lectures for students, interviews for journalists, research interviews, sermons for churches, an Arabic khutbah or lecture, podcast transcripts, subtitles for YouTubers, court and legal recordings (drafts only).

Long files

Without an account one file can be up to 15 minutes and 25 MB. A free account lifts those per-file limits and keeps your transcripts in a library, so for anything longer than a short clip, create one rather than cutting the file up.

Questions

Do you integrate with Zoom, Teams or Google Meet?
No. There is no integration and no bot. Download the recording from the app and upload the file.
Can I paste a link to the recording?
No. Link input is not supported anywhere on the site.
What do I do if my app's recording is not downloadable?
That is set by the platform, your plan or your organisation. Ask the host or admin, or check the app's help. We cannot get around it.
Is it free?
Yes — one recording up to 15 minutes and 25 MB with no account, up to 3 tries a day. A free account keeps your transcripts in a library and lifts the guest limits; the current limits and paid plans are on the pricing page.
