How to Transcribe a WhatsApp Voice Note
WhatsApp voice notes save as an audio file you can transcribe like any other recording — here is how to get the file out and what to expect from the result.

Open the voice note in WhatsApp, use the … menu or share icon to Forward or Save to Files/Photos, then upload that file to audio to text. WhatsApp voice notes are ordinary audio files under the hood (usually Opus in an .ogg or .m4a container) — nothing about them being sent through WhatsApp changes how they get transcribed.
Getting the file out of WhatsApp
- On a phone: tap the voice note's … menu (or long-press it), choose Forward, then forward it to yourself or to a note-taking app, or use Share and save it to Files (iOS) or your device storage (Android).
- On WhatsApp Desktop or Web: the voice note plays inline; use the same forward/download option from its menu, which saves it as a normal audio file on your computer.
- From a chat backup or export: WhatsApp's own "Export chat" feature includes attached media, voice notes among them, as separate files.
Once it is a file on your device rather than a bubble inside the app, it behaves exactly like a voice memo or any other short recording.
What to expect from the transcript
Voice notes are recorded on a phone microphone, often one-handed and while walking or in a noisy room, which is a harder starting point than a quiet room recording. The usual accuracy factors apply: background noise, distance from the mic and people talking over each other in a group chat voice note all cost accuracy, and no transcription tool fixes a recording after the fact.
A voice note that is mostly laughing, a group of people talking at once, or recorded in a car with the window down will come back rougher than a calm, one-person message — that is the recording, not the transcription step.
A single note vs. a long voice-note thread
One short voice note transcribes in seconds. If you are trying to get a written record of a long back-and-forth of voice notes in a group chat, it is faster to forward each one to yourself, upload them to audio to text one at a time, and keep the resulting transcripts in order than to look for a single combined-thread feature — there is not one, because WhatsApp exposes each voice note as its own file.
