How to Transcribe Short-Form Video for TikTok, Reels and Shorts

Turning a 30-to-90-second vertical video into an accurate script and caption file — what is actually different about transcribing a short, dense clip.

The Scriptorium team ·

A short-form clip transcribes the same way any other video does — the audio track is read and turned into text, same as video to text for anything longer. What is different is the density: a minute of fast-talking, edited short-form content packs in far more words per second than a meeting or a lecture, and it is far more likely to have background music mixed under the speech.

Background audio is the main obstacle

Trending audio, a music bed or a sound effect layered under narration all compete with the speech for the same frequency range, which is exactly what makes short-form content lively and exactly what makes it harder to transcribe cleanly than a single voice in a quiet room. Where you have a choice, export or re-record a version with the music track lower, or transcribe from the original narration take before it was mixed with the rest of the edit.

Getting the transcript

  1. Upload the clip to video to text — the picture and any overlay text are ignored; only the audio track is read.
  2. Read the transcript back against the clip. Fast, informal speech with slang, trailing-off sentences and filler words is normal here and does not need to be cleaned up unless you are repurposing it as prose.

From transcript to captions

Burned-in captions rendered directly into the video file are not something this product does — export a caption file and add it in whatever tool you already edit the video in.

Export SRT or VTT for a caption file with correct timing, or plain text if you just want the script to build captions from manually. Transcript vs. subtitles covers the difference between the two, and adding subtitles to a video covers the editing step this product does not.

Keep the scripts, not just the clips

A library of short-form scripts is worth keeping past the video's shelf life — it is what lets you find which clip already covered a topic before you record it again. See searching your transcripts for how that works once you have more than a few.

Questions

Can I transcribe a TikTok or Reel directly from a link?
No — upload the video file itself. Pasting a link to a hosted video is not supported; download the file first if you do not already have it.
Does background music in a short-form video break the transcript?
It makes it harder, not impossible. Music or a sound effect under narration competes with the speech; a version with the narration isolated or the music lower transcribes more cleanly.
Can this burn captions into my video automatically?
No. It exports a caption file (SRT or VTT) with correct timing, which you add to the video in your editor of choice.
