Loom videos

Loom video to text

A Loom is a screen recording with your voice on top. Download the video, upload it here, and get the narration as timestamped text for docs, tickets or training material. Scriptorium does not connect to Loom or accept Loom links.

Free preview: one file up to 15 minutes and 25 MB, 3 tries a day, no account needed.

What you are transcribing

The transcript covers what is said, not what is on screen. If you click through a bug and say 'this button here', the text says exactly that and nothing about which button. For walkthroughs, that is the reason to read the transcript with the video open, or to rewrite phrases like 'here' and 'this one' as you edit.

Getting the video, step by step

  1. Open your Loom video in a browser while signed in to your Loom account.
  2. Look in the video's menu for a download option. Whether you see it depends on your plan and on whether you own the video or it was shared with you.
  3. Save the MP4, then upload it in the box above.

Menu names and where options live change between app versions, plans and operating systems, so treat the steps as the general route and check the app's own help page for the current wording.

Whose recording is it

A Loom you recorded is yours. One a colleague or client recorded is theirs, and a screen recording often shows private data: names, emails, dashboards, customer records. Check you are allowed to share it with a third-party service before uploading. Uploading sends the file, including its audio, to our server; if the screen content is confidential, leave it out by uploading only the audio you extract, or look at self-hosting.

Length and size

Without an account one file can be up to 15 minutes and 25 MB. A free account lifts those per-file limits and keeps your transcripts in a library, so for anything longer than a short clip, create one rather than cutting the file up. Most Looms are a few minutes long and fit the guest limit easily. A recorded training session or walkthrough can run much longer.

What to do with the text

Turn it into written documentation: copy the text into your wiki, trim the umms, and add screenshots where you said 'here'. Export plain text for the doc or SRT and VTT if the video will be captioned elsewhere. For the same job on a screen-recorded meeting see meeting to text, or read the video-to-notes guide.

How it works

  1. Add a recording

Drop in a video or audio file, choose one from your device, or record from the microphone. Nothing to install.

  2. It transcribes

Speech becomes timestamped text, with speaker labels when more than one person talks.

  3. Read, fix, export

Click any line to correct it, then download TXT, subtitles, Markdown, JSON or CSV.

Questions

Can I paste a Loom share link?
No. There is no link input. Download the video from Loom and upload the file.
Does it describe what is on the screen?
No. Only speech is transcribed, not the screen content.
I cannot find a download option on my Loom.
It depends on the plan and ownership. Check Loom's help, or ask the person who recorded it.
Will my screen contents be uploaded?
If you upload the video, yes, the whole file goes to our server. Upload only the audio if the screen is sensitive.
Is it free?
Yes — one recording up to 15 minutes and 25 MB with no account, up to 3 tries a day. A free account keeps your transcripts in a library and lifts the guest limits; the current limits and paid plans are on the pricing page.
