Best YouTube transcript tools, ranked by what they state

If you want to paste a YouTube link and get text, TryScriptorium is not the tool: it takes files, not links. This list ranks the tools that do take a link on five points their own pages state; NoteGPT YouTube transcript generator scores highest with 5 of 5. Our own row is shown apart, scored the same way, so you can see where an upload route fits. Checked on 2026-10-27.

TryScriptorium, shown apart

#ToolPasted linkFree, no sign-upTimestampsFile downloadNo-caption videosScoreWhat its page says
1TryScriptoriumNoYesYesYesYes4 of 5Not a link tool: you upload a video or audio file (up to 15 minutes and 25 MB with no account). Timestamps on every line; TXT, SRT, VTT and more to download; it transcribes the audio, so it works when a video has no captions.

It is left out of the ranking because the first criterion is a pasted link and we do not have one. We make TryScriptorium, so we did not let the other four criteria lift us above tools that do the job you came for. Our weaknesses, plainly: guests get the small model; the no-account preview is limited to one file of 15 minutes and 25 MB, 3 tries a day; there is no link input (you upload a file); there is no DOCX export in the app (open the TXT in Word, or convert it with the free browser tool at /tools/transcript-to-docx); it does not join live calls and has no live captions; and the transcripts are automatic and make mistakes.

Checked on 2026-10-27. "Not stated" counts as nothing. Several of these pages are thin: for example, whether YouTubeToTranscript needs a sign-up, or what youtube-transcript.io counts as a token, is not stated, and we did not guess.

When to use which

  • A video that has captions, and you just need the text: YouTube's own panel (Show transcript in the description) needs no other tool; see how to get a YouTube transcript.
  • A link, a quick read, no account: NoteGPT and Tactiq state a free tool with no login; read what each says about limits first.
  • A video with no captions: only NoteGPT says it can; for your own video, download the file and upload it to a transcription tool, including ours.
  • Clean text from the panel: paste it into the YouTube transcript cleaner (in your browser; it never contacts YouTube).
  • General transcription tools that also take links include Happy Scribe, Maestra, Kapwing, SubEasy and Speechnotes, each stating so on its own page; they are compared in the table on the YouTube transcript page.

Whether a link-based tool may fetch a given video is between you and YouTube's terms and the creator's rights. We do not download videos from any platform.

How we ranked

Five criteria, fixed before we filled in the table. Each cell is Yes only when the vendor's own page, read on 2026-10-27, says so; No when it says the opposite; Not stated otherwise, which scores nothing. The score is the number of Yes cells and ties are listed alphabetically. This ranks what products state, not how well they transcribe: we have not tested the other tools on your audio, and a transcript from any of them needs reading against the recording.

  1. Takes a pasted YouTube link, as stated
  2. Free to use with no sign-up, as stated
  3. Timestamps in the transcript, as stated
  4. Can download the transcript as a file (not only copy), as stated
  5. Says it can transcribe a video that has no captions, as stated

We make TryScriptorium, so it is in the table and scored by the same rules. We chose criteria that matter to someone who wants a free transcript fast, which is also what we built, so weigh our own placement with the most caution. Prices and limits change; the source links are below and each is worth a click before you decide.

Questions

What is the best YouTube transcript tool?
Of the link tools whose pages we read on 2026-10-27, NoteGPT YouTube transcript generator states the most on our five points. For a video with captions, YouTube's own transcript panel needs no other tool.
Can TryScriptorium transcribe a YouTube link?
No. It takes audio or video files you upload. For your own video, download the file from YouTube Studio and upload it.
Do these tools work on videos without captions?
NoteGPT says it can generate a transcript for videos that have none; Tactiq says the transcript might not be available for every video; for the others the pages we read do not say.
Is it allowed to get a transcript of someone else's video?
YouTube's own panel shows the captions to anyone watching. Whether a third-party tool may fetch them is governed by YouTube's terms and the creator's rights; we make no claim about any tool.
Are these ratings?
No: Yes, No or Not stated per criterion, from each tool's own pages, with the date.
