Convert JPG to PNG

Turn one or more JPG files into PNG. Useful when something you are using insists on PNG, or when you need an image that will survive repeated re-saving.

Converted in your browser. A copy of the file you select is also uploaded and stored, so it can be investigated if a problem or a report of misuse ever requires that — see our privacy page for how long it is kept.

What actually changes

JPG and PNG store the same picture in fundamentally different ways. JPG is lossy: it analyses the image, decides which detail the eye is least likely to miss, and throws that away permanently to save space. PNG is lossless: it compresses without discarding anything, so what goes in comes back out exactly.

Why the PNG is usually bigger

Because it is preserving every pixel of a photograph, including the compression artefacts the JPG already introduced. Converting does not undo those artefacts — nothing can — it just stores them faithfully. Expect the PNG to be several times the size of the JPG it came from.

When this is the right conversion

When something downstream insists on PNG, when you are about to edit and re-save the file repeatedly and want no further generational loss, or when you need a format that supports transparency for work you are about to do. If none of those apply, keeping the JPG is usually the better answer.

Questions

Does converting to PNG restore quality?

No, and this is worth being clear about. JPG throws detail away when it saves. Converting to PNG preserves exactly what is left, but it cannot bring back what the JPG already discarded. The PNG will usually be a larger file than the JPG for that reason.

Can I convert several at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and each is converted and offered as its own download.

Is my image uploaded?

The conversion happens in your browser. A copy of each image you add is also uploaded and stored, the same as any file sent to Scriptorium, so it can be investigated if a problem or a report of misuse ever requires that.

Turn what is said into text

Scriptorium's main job is transcription: bring a video or an audio file and get back text you can read, correct, search and export.
