Convert PNG to JPG
Turn PNG files into JPG, usually to make them much smaller. Transparent areas are filled with a background colour, because JPG has no transparency.

Converted in your browser. A copy of the file you select is also uploaded and stored, so it can be investigated if a problem or a report of misuse ever requires that — see our privacy page for how long it is kept.
The trade you are making
PNG stores every pixel exactly. JPG approximates, and in exchange the file is typically a fraction of the size. For photographs that is a straightforwardly good deal, which is why essentially every camera in the world writes JPG. For screenshots, diagrams, logos and anything with crisp text, it is a bad deal: JPG smears the hard edges those images are made of, and the artefacts are plainly visible.
Transparency has to go somewhere
JPG has no concept of a transparent pixel. Anything see-through in the PNG has to be composited onto something, so this tool fills it with a background colour you choose — white by default, because that is what most documents and most pages sit on. If the transparency matters, the conversion you want is to WebP, which keeps it and is still far smaller than PNG.
Getting the size down further
The quality setting on this page does most of the work. If the result is still larger than you want, the image is probably bigger in pixels than it needs to be — try resizing it first.
Questions
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot store it. Anything transparent is composited onto a solid background — white by default, and you can change it before converting. If you need the transparency, keep the PNG or use WebP.
Why is the JPG so much smaller?
Because JPG is lossy and PNG is not. For photographs that trade is almost always worth it. For screenshots, diagrams and text, JPG tends to smear edges — PNG or WebP is the better choice there.
Is my image uploaded?
The conversion happens in your browser. A copy of the image is also uploaded and stored, the same as any file sent to Scriptorium, so it can be investigated if a problem or a report of misuse ever requires that.
Turn what is said into text
Scriptorium's main job is transcription: bring a video or an audio file and get back text you can read, correct, search and export.
