MOV to SRT

MOV to SRT

Turn a MOV recording into an SRT subtitle file. Upload the iPhone or QuickTime video, check the transcript, and export an .srt with timestamps to use in iMovie, Final Cut, Premiere or on a video platform.

Free preview: one file up to 15 minutes and 25 MB, 3 tries a day, no account needed.

MOV in an Apple workflow

Footage from an iPhone, a Mac screen recording or a camera export is usually MOV. Editors such as Final Cut Pro, iMovie, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere can import an SRT file as captions or subtitles; the exact menu differs by app and version, so check your editor's help for "import captions". The SRT carries only text and times, so it does not depend on your video's frame rate or resolution.

Steps

  1. Export or copy the MOV off the device (AirDrop, Files or cable).
  2. Upload it above. If it is large, extract the audio first.
  3. Correct the transcript, then Export, SRT.
  4. Import the .srt in your editor or upload it to the platform.

If the subtitles drift

A subtitle file made from the original MOV lines up with it. It can be offset if you later cut the start of the video or exported at a different speed. Add or remove the same amount from every cue with the subtitle time shifter.

What this does not do

  • It does not embed captions in the MOV or burn them into the picture.
  • It does not translate subtitles; speech-to-English translation exists in the app, other target languages do not.
  • It does not label which line is which person in the SRT unless you add speaker names yourself.

How it works

  1. Add a recording

Drop in a video or audio file, choose one from your device, or record from the microphone. Nothing to install.

  2. It transcribes

Speech becomes timestamped text, with speaker labels when more than one person talks.

  3. Read, fix, export

Click any line to correct it, then download TXT, subtitles, Markdown, JSON or CSV.

Questions

Does the SRT work with iMovie?
SRT import support depends on the app and version; check the app's help. Final Cut, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve document caption import.
Is HEVC a problem?
No. Only the audio is read, and the video codec does not matter.
Does the SRT have one line per sentence?
Each transcript segment becomes one subtitle cue with its start and end time, as the recogniser produced it. Some cues can be longer than a screen likes; the free subtitle line splitter re-wraps them in your browser.
Is it free?
Yes — one file up to 15 minutes and 25 MB with no account, up to 3 tries a day. A free account keeps your transcripts in a library and lifts the guest limits; the current limits and paid plans are on the pricing page.
