Can Google Docs or Word Transcribe Arabic Audio?
Google Docs voice typing handles live speech only; Word's Transcribe takes uploaded audio and lists 11 Arabic variants. What each page says.
The Scriptorium team ·
Google Docs cannot transcribe an Arabic audio file: its voice typing takes live speech from your microphone, and its help page mentions no file upload. Microsoft Word can, through a separate feature called Transcribe, which accepts uploaded audio and lists 11 Arabic variants, but it needs a Microsoft 365 subscription and has a monthly cap. Word's live Dictate lists Arabic only as a preview language. This page reads what each vendor's own help page says, as of 2026-10-26.
The three features, side by side
| Feature | Input | Arabic | Needs | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Docs voice typing | Live microphone only (no file upload mentioned) | Arabic and 14 country variants: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates | Chrome, Edge or Safari, a working microphone; Tools > Voice typing | Google Docs Help: type with your voice |
| Word Dictate | Live speech; your speech is sent to Microsoft | Preview only: Arabic (Bahrain), (Egypt) and (Saudi Arabia). Microsoft warns that preview languages "may have lower accuracy or limited punctuation support" | Microsoft 365 subscription, a microphone and internet | Microsoft Support: dictate in Word |
| Word Transcribe | Uploaded audio (.wav, .mp4, .m4a, .mp3) or a recording made in Word | 11 variants: Bahrain (modern standard), Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates | Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows for commercial tenants, new Edge or Chrome, internet; 300 minutes of uploads a month with Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Support: transcribe your recordings |
Microsoft's page lists a larger allowance for Copilot-licensed users, which we do not cover here. None of the three pages gives an accuracy figure for Arabic, so we quote none.
Can I play a recording into Google Docs voice typing?
The help page describes speaking into a microphone. Playing a recording aloud into it is not a documented use, and echo and room noise will hurt; we have not tested it and do not recommend it for anything you will rely on.
Which should you use?
| You have | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Live speech you want typed as you talk | Google Docs voice typing | It takes Arabic with country variants, in a browser, and its page lists no subscription. |
| A recorded Arabic file and a Microsoft 365 subscription (Windows) | Word Transcribe | It takes uploads and lists 11 Arabic variants, within the monthly cap. |
| A recorded Arabic file, no subscription | Our no-account preview | It takes one file at a time, up to 15 minutes and 25 MB, with 3 tries a day, with the small model, and exports TXT, SRT, VTT, Markdown, JSON and CSV. |
| A file over the preview limit | A free account, or split the file | A free account includes None transcription minutes a month. |
What none of them solves
- Dialects and mixed speech. Arabic variety names on a page are not accuracy claims. Test your own dialect on a short clip.
- Review. Any automatic draft needs a check against the audio before you quote or publish it.
- Privacy. Word Dictate sends speech to Microsoft by its own account, and an upload to any hosted service leaves your computer. See transcribing offline if the recording must stay on your machine.

Checked on 2026-10-26. Google Docs Help (voice typing: live microphone, browsers, menu path, the Arabic list), Microsoft Support's Dictate page (Microsoft 365, live speech, Arabic as a preview language with three locales, the lower-accuracy warning) and its Transcribe page (upload formats, 300-minute cap, 11 Arabic variants, availability). Not read: Google's page on file upload beyond what it says (it says nothing), any file-size limit for Transcribe (the page states none), accuracy for Arabic (none given). Menus, prices and limits change; confirm on the vendor's page before you rely on them.
