Best Free TurboScribe Alternatives (2026)
Free TurboScribe alternatives compared by what they really limit: file length, sign-up, downloads, privacy and languages, from each vendor's own page.
The Scriptorium team ·
TurboScribe is one of the more generous free transcription services, and if its free tier fits what you do, there is little reason to leave. People still look for alternatives, and the reasons are practical: they want something that works without creating an account, they have a file longer than the free cap, they do not want a recording to sit on a third-party cloud, or they need a language or export format the free plan does not give them. This guide is organised around those reasons rather than around a ranked list, because the best option depends on which one is yours.
We make one of the tools below (Scriptorium), so read our entries with that in mind. We have tried to describe the others only with what their own pages say, and to say plainly where they are stronger than us.
What TurboScribe gives you for free
The pages of turboscribe.ai that came up in search describe three free transcripts a day, each up to 30 minutes, and an Unlimited plan at $10 a month billed annually or $20 a month billed monthly, with files up to 10 hours or 5 GB and up to 50 files uploaded at once. One caveat on our own checking: TurboScribe's site refused automated requests (HTTP 403), so we read these figures from its pages as shown in search results rather than by opening the pricing page. Treat them as a guide and check the pricing page yourself.
That is a strong free offer: three half-hour files a day is 90 minutes daily, which covers most occasional users. If that is enough for you and you are happy to have an account, TurboScribe is a sensible choice. The alternatives matter when one of the constraints below applies.
If you do not want to create an account
The no-account preview takes one file at a time, up to 15 minutes and 25 MB, with 3 tries a day, and deletes the file after 24 hours. That is less than TurboScribe's per-file limit and our daily count is smaller, so for pure volume we are not the better pick. What you get is speed to first result: you upload a file without an account, read the transcript, and decide later whether an account is worth it.
Another no-account option is Riverside's free transcription tool. Its page says "Unlimited transcriptions for free. No sign up required." and "100+ languages", and it does not state a file-length cap. Two limits it does state: it accepts MP3, WAV, MP4 and MOV files, and its FAQ says that with the free tool multi-speaker audio is assigned to one speaker. Downloads are TXT or SRT. For a single-voice recording in one of those four formats, that is hard to beat on price.
If you need a transcript file you can use right away
Some free tools show you a transcript but charge for the download. VEED's video-to-text tool is free to try without an upfront sign-up and advertises 125+ languages, but its page says transcript downloads (VTT, SRT, TXT) need an upgrade, and the free video export carries a watermark. VEED is a video editor first, so if you are going to edit the video anyway that trade is fair; if you only want text, it is not the cheapest route.
In Scriptorium the exports are TXT, timestamped TXT, SRT, VTT, Markdown, JSON and CSV. There is no watermark because there is no video output at all: it is a transcription tool, not an editor.
If your file is longer than the free cap
This is where TurboScribe's 30-minute free cap and our 15-minute preview cap both bite. Options:
- Split the file. A one-hour lecture becomes several short pieces with any audio editor or a one-line ffmpeg command. It is tedious but free, and the long-recording guide shows how to cut at pauses so no sentence is split.
- Use a free account. A registered Scriptorium account lifts the per-file preview limits and includes None transcription minutes a month; the pricing page has current numbers for paid plans.
- Pay by the hour. Sonix lists pay-as-you-go at $10 an hour and a 30-minute trial with no card, and Happy Scribe lists plans from 120 minutes a month and a 10-minute free trial. Both are reasonable for a one-off long job; neither is free for long files.
If the recording is sensitive
A cloud service, ours included when you use the hosted site, receives your file. If that is the problem, the answer is to run the model yourself. Our private-transcription comparison covers the desktop apps (MacWhisper, Buzz) and self-hosting; both keep audio on your own hardware, and MacWhisper and Buzz are free to start with.

Which should you pick?
- A few files a day, account is fine, and you want the most free minutes: TurboScribe.
- Single-voice MP3, WAV, MP4 or MOV, no account, no stated length cap: Riverside's free tool.
- A first look at your file with exports in seven formats, no account: Scriptorium (33 languages plus automatic detection).
- You will edit the video as well: VEED.
- The audio must not leave your machine: a local app or self-hosting, not any hosted service.
