Descript alternative

Descript alternative: Scriptorium vs Descript

Descript is a text-based audio and video editor: you edit the transcript and the media follows. If that is the job, it is far more than Scriptorium, which makes transcripts and subtitle files and has no media editor. If you only need the words out of a recording, a plain transcription tool is lighter.

Updated

Where Descript is the better choice

  • Edit audio and video by editing the transcript, remove filler words, add captions, dubbing and translation.
  • Speaker detection on every plan, including the free one (its pricing page).
  • Timeline export to editors such as Premiere and Final Cut on higher plans.

Where Scriptorium fits better

  • No editor to learn: upload, read, correct, export.
  • The first file needs no account.
  • 33 languages plus automatic detection against Descript's 25 stated on its pricing page.

Checked on 2026-10-24 from the vendor's own pages listed below. Prices and limits change; confirm on their site before you buy. A cell that says "Check their site" means the page did not state it, was unreadable to us, or contradicted itself, and we chose not to guess.

Which should you pick?

  • Pick Descript if You want to edit the recording itself, remove ums and produce finished video or podcasts.
  • Pick Scriptorium if You want a transcript or subtitle file and nothing else.

Scriptorium's transcripts are automatic and make mistakes; read them against the audio. The free preview is on the home page, and the pricing page lists plans.

Questions

Is Scriptorium a video editor?
No. It produces text and subtitle files. For edited video use an editor and import the SRT.
Does Descript export SRT?
Its pricing and transcription pages we read did not list transcript export formats. Check Descript's help center for the current list.
Is it free?
Yes — one file up to 15 minutes and 25 MB with no account, up to 3 tries a day. A free account keeps your transcripts in a library and lifts the guest limits; the current limits and paid plans are on the pricing page.
